Composting on the road to the closed cycle

Compost

The Composts

We have used the winter to build composts. Mostly we are using used wood, but as well some locally milled and bought. And of course all the printing off-set sheets we found under the barn roof are great to build with.

First off the assembly line was this kitchen compost. We try to recycle everything and not put anything in the municipal garbage so we have alot of stuff to compost. We had 6 styrofoam sheets from the washing maching box so that meant 6 sides. It all turned our rather orthodox. Joel was not happy about the way the handle just happened to turn out.

The outhouse has always been a part of the farm. Tonight finally we fixed the jugs to hold the urine and installed the new latrine buckets.Ragn Sells was great and sponsored these 6 latrine buckets and thereby became Suderbyn's first private sector sponsor! The latrine buckets have a label where you write in the date and signature so we can keep track of the age of the compost.

The rocket is the first stage of the composting process. n the rocket a bucket should stay one month right side up and then be turned upside-down and onto the next shelf for month two. Even if it is anaerobic decomposition, gas can build up and this should be bled off. After the two months, its into the crystal they go.

There is just one bucket here now(the photo is staged). Normally the bucket would be full and upside-down on the upper shelf.

The crystal is to be able to take 6 buckets but it could fit 12 buckets if needed. After 6 months the buckets can be emptied into the post-compost, whiuch has not been built yet.

In the crystal there is a floor that faciltates good air irculation around the buckets. The doors canot be seen from a distance. The whole object is covered by ledgible newspaper print from 1971.
