Regarding the current situation at Suderbyn

About the Suderbyn property today

The existing buildings of "the Sluice"

The property of the cooperative society has a number of existing buildings. Today there are two main buildings: the big barn and the old farm house (130 sq m). The oldest part of the farm house was constructed in 1834 out of solid timberlogs. A "modern" addition came in the 1940s with the solid limestone stone section. The farm house will be the base for a pioneering collective of up to 8 members until the eco-village is constructed, and even thereafer.

We expect the barn with be used for businesses (handicrafts, shops, offices) as it does not fit the needs of a permaculture.  A café on the property is clearly desirable. Commercial activities oriented towards the general public will be concentrated to "the Sluice" area.

If the farm house is not adequate until the new houses are built we will look into other estetical solutions of temporary housing in cabins, caravans, circus wagens etc. We dont think this will be necessary.

The Land

In the middle of the 5 ha property is  a beautiful bedrock field covered with trees not unlike a park. It is here we would like to build up an eco-village under the banner of voluntary simplicity. This field has both interesting trees and a number of protected ruins of past settlement on the site. We wish to carefully cohabitate with the trees and ruins.

The Area near the Property

Suderbyn lies 6-7 km south of Visby, just opposite the north end of old Tofta firing range. Here one can find lots of forests and rangeland down to the beaches of Baltic Sea. Just one kilometre from Suderbyn is the naturally-elevated Hallbro "castle", an ancient protective fortification from neolithic period, today a wonderful excursion site and nature reserve.

2.5 km from Suderbyn is the Baltic coastline. Here at Blåhäll fishing camp one finds miles of untouched shoreline to the north and south.
